Once again, by God's good graces, Maranatha members are hard at work on the mission field in Buff Bay, Jamaica, serving a church and community we've had the pleasure of working with for several years. Let's continue to pray for the Jamaica team over the next week as they serve in various ways -- providing medical care, lending a helping hand to the local church and brethren there, and faithfully preaching the Word. Please keep checking back on this post for more updates throughout the week.
Here's an update from Jamaica team member Ricky Chae:
So much has happened since we arrived at the GLOBE Mission house in Buff Bay, Jamaica, early last Friday morning. Our days have been full of activity that have been Christ-focused, fun and challenging for the mind and body.
Here are some highlight's from this week:
Children’s ministry is a big focus and we have 2 Vacation Bible School (VBS) programs. The first VBS, held at Tranquility Church, serves the local community kids after school and is supported by most of the team. Over 60 kids (ages ranging from 4-12) eagerly arrive to participate in learning about Jesus. This week’s memory verse is Luke 15:8-10. Each evening there is a smaller VBS held at Mt. Vernon Church, where 15 children come to spend time with the team for an hour and a half.
Medical clinics started Saturday at Orange Bay Church and continued Monday at Buff Bay Church. Patients come to see our own Dr. Tom, and Dr. Lee from North Shore Baptist Church, for their physical needs. And the doctors also reach out to many of the patients in prayer.
Local outreach at grade schools started this week as well, with 2 teams going to separate schools starting with Scripture reading, a short devotion from God’s word, a personal testimony of God’s redeeming grace, and prayer.
Last Friday we spent several hours clearing Brother Wilton’s home and hopping down a termite-ridden tree that was uncomfortably close to his house. Wilton is a long time church member of the Orange Bay church who is physically restricted to a wheelchair and is very limited in mobility.
Each evening Pastor Ed Moore and Celia Foster lead a men’s and women’s discipleship class. Pastor Ed has been leading more than 20 men using material from "The Fruitful Life," by Jerry Bridges. Anna Moore started leading more than 40 women using "Praying the Bible," by Donald Whitney. Unfortunately, Anna had to leave early on Sunday to care for her mother and father. Please pray for them. Celia Foster from North Shore has stepped up in leading the women.
As a team, we end each day with a time of encouragement and reflection. We have been focusing on the books of Jonah and John.
Jamaica really is beautiful. So, while we have been very busy, we have also had a little bit of time to unwind and enjoy the Blue Lagoon and Winifred Beach for a couple of hours. The water was invigorating and unique. It was good time to get a little bit of rest there.
